These Fractions Make Me Fractious

Fractions can be useful, we can’t deny.

Percentage, pi, and what slice of the pie

We can get; the discounts, bargains and gains.

Yet while we are taking all of these pains;

Working out added value, returns, wealth,

Sneaking up with inevitable stealth

Are consequences. What portion is left?

When we’re winning, who’s losing? Who’s bereft

Of Beauty. Life. Value. The synergy

Nature provides? We glut on energy,

Sap Earth’s resources. Who has really won?

Two-thirds of animals – gone.

Three-quarters of insects – gone.

Nine-tenths of the world’s fish – gone.

This ratio of survival. Who’s won?
